Friday October 2nd: Friends in Heaven

The Guardian Angels

“Their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Heavenly Father.”

Matthew 18: 1 – 5. 10

Today’s memorial of the Guardian Angels reminds us that God is constantly watching over us, caring for us, and protecting us from danger. Jesus says, “Their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Heavenly Father.” This is not just a child’s fantasy, but a real assurance that God never abandons us. This is good news for adults also, since we all need to know that we have a friend in heaven keeping us safe. In moments of danger, temptation, loneliness, or uncertainty, we can trust that God watches over us.

Today’s memorial can also shape our behaviour towards others in that we too can become “guardian angels” to one another. We may not have wings, but we can protect, encourage, and guide others. Parents can be guardian angels to their children; friends can be guardian angels to one another; teachers, neighbours can become instruments of God’s love and care.

Today, we thank God for our guardian angels and we ask: Whom can we be angels to right now?
