“Who then is the greatest?”
Matthew 18: 1-5
When I was in primary school, I always wanted to come first and sit at the top of the class. Maybe that’s where I began to believe that being better meant being important. In church, I was the girl who did the “mostest,” perhaps another way of feeling valued.
So, when the disciples asked Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” I understood them because I too have spent a lot of my life seeking validation based on the things I have done.
But Jesus places a child among them and says, “Unless you change and become like children…”
This is where St Thérèse speaks directly to me. While I was busy trying to be “big,” Thérèse discovered the power of becoming “little.” Her Little Way was not about doing great things, but doing small things with great love, trusting completely in God.
As I grew older, I am learning that I don’t have to prove my importance. Like Thérèse, I can simply become little, reach for God’s hand, and trust His love to be enough.
