Scarborough catechists walk in the footsteps of St Francis

On September 18–20, the catechists of St Joseph’s, Scarborough gathered for their annual weekend retreat, which was held at Alicia’s Palace on Lady Chancellor Road. In keeping with the Jubilee Year honouring St Francis of Assisi, our theme was: The life and legacy of St Francis. Each of our three groups had the responsibility of presenting one aspect of the life/legacy of the saint. Our topics were:

  1. Francis—the Man
  2. Francis—the Message
  3. Franciscans today.

It was truly a tremendous learning experience for us as we researched all things Franciscan and prepared to present our findings to our peers.

The presentations were dynamic and very entertaining! They included dramatic first-person accounts of pivotal events in the saint’s life, ‘live’ TV interviews, a speech band and opportunities for quiet reflection and sharing.

On Saturday evening, we journeyed to St Francis RC Church in Belmont where we were warmly welcomed as we joined the congregation for the celebration of Holy Mass.

Using the analogy of the sandalwood tree, which retains its aroma for a long time despite prevailing conditions, Fr Mikkel Trestrail challenged us to exude the fragrance of Christ at all times—a suggestion that St Francis would definitely endorse!

Our retreat came to a fitting climax on Sunday with an unforgettable tour of Paramin. For many of us, it was our first visit. We were in awe at the steep hills, the hairpin turns and the stunning views, and though a bit scared at times, we enjoyed every minute of our tour.

The La Vigie Lookout did not disappoint! It was awesome! We could almost hear Francis singing his glorious Canticle of Creation as we admired the breathtaking beauty all around us. “Praise be to you my Lord, with all your creatures. Chief of all is Sir Brother Sun . . .  Praise be to you my Lord for Brother Wind . . . Praise be to you my Lord for our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and keeps us. . .”

Thanks very much to Carlos Felician, our tour guide and the folks who prepared that delicious lunch for us! It was indeed another wonderful weekend retreat, and we give God all thanks and praise for making it possible. Pax et bonum!
