“I had John beheaded, so who is this…?”
Luke 9: 7-9
There are echoes of violence in today’s Gospel. Jesus is doing Kingdom work, performing signs and wonders, and word is getting around. Herod, hearing the reports, is both confused and curious about who Jesus is. He dismisses speculation that this man was John the Baptist, because he knows the part he played in John’s death. I had John beheaded Herod declares. But he still wants to know about Jesus, he still wants to get close to this new messenger.
Like his forerunner, we know that suffering and death await the Son of Man. And still, the Gospel inspires feelings of hope and confirmation of victory. There is hope and joy in knowing that there will always be someone to share the Good News, to tell of the coming of Christ and His Kingdom. First came the prophets of old, then John the Baptist. Now, in our days, we have the Saints and each of us, modern day disciples and witnesses. We all proclaim that Jesus’ presence and mission are unstoppable. Amen.
