Tuesday September 22nd: Circles of Belonging

The parish Church becomes an extended family of companions, a family of families, who discern, journey, and serve together.

Luke 8:19-21

Jesus widens the meaning of family. When his mother and brothers stand outside, unable to reach him through the crowd, he points to a deeper bond: “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.” He does not reject his natural family but reveals that discipleship creates a community rooted in faithful listening and shared mission.

Our journey in discipleship begins in the family but many experience tension when vocation, ministry, or convictions are misunderstood. Like Jesus’ relatives, families may stand “outside” the experiences that shape our lives and seek to call us back. Yet synodality invites us to walk together, listen, and recognize that God gathers us into “circles of belonging.”

The parish Church becomes an extended family of companions, a family of families, who discern, journey, and serve together. Our work for justice and peace flourish when we not only hear God’s word but embody it, by welcoming the excluded, building bridges across divisions, caring for God’s creation, and upholding dignity.

In doing so, we become Christ’s family, witnessing to communion, reconciliation, and hope in our world today.
