St Matthew. Apostle, Evangelist
“And indeed, I came not to call the upright, but sinners.”
Matthew 9:9-13
Jesus sees Matthew not as others see him, but as a person capable of becoming more. His simple invitation, “Follow me,” reveals a God who does not wait for us to become perfect before calling us. Jesus enters Matthew’s world, sits at his table, and shares fellowship with those considered sinners.
This is the heart of mercy: God comes close rather than stand at a distance in judgement. “I desire mercy, not sacrifice” challenges us to look at ourselves and others with compassion. Discipleship begins when we allow Jesus into our wounded places, receive his mercy, rise, and follow him.
Lord help me to see myself as you see me and help me say yes to becoming your disciple.
