Friday September 11th: Blinded by the beam!

“Take the beam out of your own eye first…”

Luke 6: 39 – 42

In today’s gospel, Jesus confronts one of the greatest obstacles to authentic discipleship: hypocrisy. He paints a vivid picture of a person eager to remove the tiny speck from their neighbour’s eye while ignoring the large wooden beam in their own. Jesus’ point is not that we should never correct others, but that correction must begin with sincere self-examination. A person that has honestly faced their own weaknesses will speak with humility, patience, and compassion rather than pride or condemnation.

Hypocrisy blinds us because it creates the illusion that other people’s faults are more serious than our own. When we judge others without first allowing God’s grace to minister to us, we become harsh and unforgiving. Jesus calls us to be different. Before pointing outward, we must look inward. Before demanding conversion from others, we must seek our own.

Only when we allow Christ to remove the beam from our eyes can we truly help others see more clearly. Genuine holiness is never self-righteous; it is humble, honest, and merciful.
