Saturday September 5th: Mercy before sacrifice

“The Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath.”

Luke 6:1-5

We spent most of that Sunday dressed for Mass. However, we were in the Emergency room at the Children’s hospital. Being present to the young parents and their two-year-old first born seemed more urgent, more lifegiving.

We could have gone to Mass in the evening. That would have been out of a sense of obligation.

Instead, we spent the evening enjoying family time, being delighted by the joyful antics of a feisty 2-year-old, giving quiet praise and thanks to God for His love, compassion, and mercy.

In Jesus’ reference to David’s use of “the bread of offering, which only the priests could lawfully eat…” He was saying then… and now, that satisfying human needs and showing love and mercy to others takes precedence over enslavement to religious rituals. Jesus is reminding us of the original intent of the law – a gift, a blessing from The Lord of the Sabbath of holy rest, opportunities to delight in God’s creation and focus on spiritual restoration.

St. Teresa of Kolkata, intercede for us.
