Friday September 4th: Mirroring the life of Christ

The clearest sign that we belong to Jesus is not simply our words but our actions.

Luke 5: 33 – 39

In today’s gospel, people notice a striking difference between the disciples of John and those of Jesus. John’s disciples fast often, reflecting their teacher’s call to repentance and preparation for the coming Messiah. Jesus’ disciples, however, rejoice and share meals because the Bridegroom is already with them. The contrast is not a contradiction but a revelation that the teacher shapes the lives of disciples.

Every teacher leaves an imprint on those who follow. John’s ministry formed hearts that longed and waited. Jesus forms hearts that celebrate God’s saving presence while still embracing sacrifice at the proper time. Their different practices flow from their relationship with their master.

As disciples, we inevitably resemble the one who forms us. We speak as our teacher speaks, value what our teacher values, and live according to the example set before us. If Christ is truly our Teacher, then our lives should reflect His joy and celebration. The clearest sign that we belong to Jesus is not simply our words but our actions.
