“Put out into deep water…”
Luke 5:1-11
Jesus, pressed by the crowd, used Simon’s fishing-boat as a pulpit. The fishermen were cleaning nets after an unsuccessful night at sea. After teaching, the Carpenter asked the fisherman to “put out into the deep and pay out the nets for a catch.”
Simon, against his better judgement, obeyed the Master. That obedience resulted in such an overwhelming catch that the weight threatened damage to boats and net. Work turned to worship when Simon saw Jesus as LORD and himself as sinful and unworthy in the presence of such Power and Providence.
But Jesus does not want our fears and inadequacies to prevent a positive response to His call to discipleship. He would use talents and experiences in new, transformative ways. Fishermen will be fishers of men. We, too, are called to put out into the deep.
Just as we are, we come and humbly pray, “Jesus, fill us, use us. Free us to win souls unto you.”
