The wise virgins bring extra oil because they understand that faithful discipleship requires perseverance and constant preparedness.
Matthew 25: 1 – 13
In today’s parable, the bridegroom’s delay is not an accident but a lesson. His lateness represents the period between Christ’s Ascension and His return. The early Christians expected the Lord to come quickly, but Jesus teaches that His coming may seem delayed. The question is not when He will come, but whether we will be ready when He does.
The wise virgins bring extra oil because they understand that faithful discipleship requires perseverance and constant preparedness. The oil symbolizes a living faith sustained by prayer, charity, the sacraments, and daily obedience. These cannot be borrowed from someone else when the decisive moment arrives. The foolish virgins discover too late that preparation cannot be postponed or ignored.
The delay also reveals God’s patient wisdom. He gives us time to get ourselves ready. But that time is not endless. The bridegroom will come, though unexpectedly. Jesus therefore says we must constantly stay awake. Christian vigilance is not anxious waiting but faithful living each day, ready to welcome the Lord whenever He comes.
