Wednesday August 26th: Internal cleansing needed

They reject the prophet standing in front of them.

Matthew 23:27-32

Jesus describes the scribes and Pharisees as whitewashed tombs, beautiful and clean on the outside but filled with death and uncleanness. This would have been a powerful image as tombs were whitewashed so that people could see them. He is teaching us that external religious practices are valueless if they conceal pride, hypocrisy, injustice, or unwillingness to obey God.

Jesus also speaks about those who build and decorate tombs of the prophets while claiming that they would have never participated in killing them. Their words sound respectful, but their actions reveal that they share the same resistance to God’s messengers. They honour the messengers of the past but reject the prophet standing in front of them.

Let’s be encouraged by today’s Gospel to examine our hearts before God. Let’s choose one area where our outward actions do not match our faith and ask the Lord for the grace to change it through concrete acts of humility, repentance, or mercy.
