Just a girl
Recently, I was having a conversation with a friend about the show Off Campus. As we talked, I mentioned that one thing I didn’t like about the series was how it portrayed sexual activity among university students as something that happens all the time. It made it seem as though having sex is simply part of the university experience.
My friend responded, “Well, you know it’s normal for people our age to have sex. The show is just reflecting reality. When we start UWI in September, you’ll realise it too, especially if you’re living on the halls of residence.” That conversation stayed with me.
Not because I was shocked that people think that way, but because it made me realise how easily we begin to accept something as right simply because it is common. Today’s culture constantly tells us that sex is expected, that waiting is outdated, and that if “everyone is doing it”, then it must be okay.
But since when has normal become the standard for what is good?
As Christians, we are called to live differently. Throughout Scripture, God presents sex as a beautiful gift to be shared within the lifelong commitment of marriage. It is never portrayed as something casual or meaningless.
When we take that gift outside of His design, it can bring emotional pain, broken relationships, guilt, and consequences He never intended us to carry.
Waiting until marriage isn’t about following a list of rules or missing out on life. It’s about trusting that the God who created us knows what is best for us. His commands aren’t meant to limit our joy; they’re meant to protect it.
Many young people today feel immense pressure to fit in. Friends, social media, television shows, and even university culture can create the impression that everyone is sexually active.
But the truth is, you don’t have to follow the crowd to belong. Your worth is not determined by your relationship status or your sexual experience. Your value comes from being created in the image of God.
Purity isn’t about perfection. We all make mistakes, and God’s grace is available to anyone who turns to Him. If you’ve made choices you regret, know that your story isn’t over. Jesus offers forgiveness, healing, and a fresh start.
For those who are choosing to wait, don’t let anyone make you feel ashamed for honouring God’s design. Waiting requires courage, especially in a world that celebrates instant gratification, but it is a choice worth making.
As I prepare to begin university, I know I’ll meet people with many different beliefs and lifestyles. I respect every person’s freedom to make their own choices, but I’ve also decided that I don’t have to compromise my convictions to fit in. Following Christ has never been about doing what everyone else is doing. It’s about faithfully living the life He calls us to live.
Culture changes with every generation, but God’s design does not. Rather than allowing what is popular to shape our values, we are called to stand firm in what is true.
Sex is a beautiful gift. Like every gift from God, it is most beautiful when it is received and lived according to His design.
