The donations sent by the Church and non-governmental organisations from Trinidad and Tobago to Caritas in Tucupita, Venezuela, have been received with gratitude.
Local Church representatives have been coordinating with the Catholic Church in Venezuela and Caritas Tucupita to send humanitarian aid following the 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes on June 24.
The first shipment of humanitarian aid coordinated by Catholic ministries and parishes was sent via vessel on August 6. In a video message recorded in the Parish of Pedernales, San Francisco de Guayo Mission, Bishop Ernesto Jose Romero Rivas of Tucupita sent his thanks in Spanish.
“I want to thank the Archdiocese of Port of Spain, Trinidad, for this fraternal closeness and for this aid provided to the people who have suffered from the earthquake, the earthquakes in Venezuela. Thank you, and may God bless you.” Sandra Vilar, from Caritas Tucupita, also sent a video message of thanks for the love and generosity shown toward Venezuelan brothers and sisters most in need, after the earthquakes struck La Guaira. “We would like to give thanks to the entire population of Trinidad and Tobago for all their love and generosity towards all our brothers in need after the tragedy of the devastating earthquakes in La Guaira. All donations that you all are seeing in this salon will be assigned to La Guaira to attend to all their principal needs. Thanks so much and may God multiply it for you all with life and health.”
The humanitarian aid effort involved many working together and special thanks was expressed to the Catholic communities and churches, schools, Republic Bank, the Penal Health Centre, and Daniel Duran (vessel owner) and his team for support and collaboration.
Phase 2 of another drive for aid has been launched by the Penal Parish Ministry for Migrants and Refugees. Medication, hygiene products and medical supplies are requested. For more information, call 744-5930, 322-2042 or 797-1478.
