Loving God and neighbour are not competing actions; they naturally flow into and from each other.
Matthew 22: 34 – 40
Jesus is asked which is the greatest commandment. He answers by summing up the whole of God’s law into two inseparable commands: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind,” and “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”
Why are these the greatest commandments? Because they reveal the very heart of God’s covenant. Every other commandment flows from them. If we truly love God, we will worship Him, trust Him, and seek His will above all else. If we genuinely love our neighbour, we will act with justice, mercy, forgiveness, and compassion. Love is not merely an emotion but a decision to do good faithfully.
Loving God and neighbour are not competing actions; they naturally flow into and from each other. When we truly love God, we must also love every person who bears His image and likeness.
Every day we are challenged to examine our lives to see if genuine love shapes us, our relationships, and our behaviour.
