Public appeal for Archbishop Emeritus Rivas

Archbishop Emeritus Robert Rivas OP is expected to remain warded at West Shore Medical Private Hospital, Cocorite, for a further two weeks undergoing treatment for a condition which has caused him considerable discomfort and left him confined to bed. He was admitted for treatment on July 13.

On July 28, a public appeal to offset his medical expenses was launched online. Fr Urban Hudlin OP, parish priest at St Finbar’s RC Church, said the response from the public has been “better than we expected”. He attributed this to people recognising the valuable contribution which has been made by a senior member of clergy. “They have really gone beyond themselves to ensure that health is preserved. So, what has happened, people have really stepped up, and they are supporting this cause.”

Fr Hudlin explained the appeal for blood on behalf of Archbishop Rivas was not because the archbishop needed surgery, but his white blood cells were not within normal range. “He is doing well and we are really appreciative of all those who have reached out and really supportive of a cause by making their monetary contributions. Please, continue to do that,” Fr Hudlin stated.

After Archbishop Rivas is discharged from the hospital recuperation will continue at Promise House. “Special care” will be needed as he is unable to walk.

The St Finbar’s Dominican Community, Diego Martin, last month issued a public appeal on behalf of Archbishop Rivas whose treatment for discitis required a course of intravenous antibiotics and spinal immobilisation for physiotherapy.

Archbishop Rivas’ medical insurance covered 80 per cent of treatment cost until July 24. Subsequently, insurance coverage dropped to 40 per cent. The last estimate given for six weeks at hospital, medication and treatment was $401,000. The public can assist Archbishop Rivas by depositing contributions or making online transfers to:

Archbishop Rivas’ relative, Ken Chang On, said Archbishop Rivas needs to get rest as there has been a steady stream of visitors to his bedside. He advised that apart from family members, visitors should check at the nurse’s station before going to his bedside and not stay for more than ten minutes.

Chang On said, “They don’t recommend bringing him any food as it encourages ants. If you do bring him something he likes, bring only enough for him to consume and take away any excess.” Afternoon visits are not recommended because Archbishop Rivas tends to be very tired. Chang On asked for continued prayers for Archbishop Rivas. —LPG
