Friday July 31st: An obstacle to faith

“A prophet is not without honour except in his native place.”

Matthew 13: 54 – 58

Jesus returns to His hometown, where He is met not with faith, but with familiarity that turns into disbelief. The people ask, “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds?” Instead of opening their hearts, they close them because they think they already know Him. Their familiarity becomes an obstacle to faith.

Jesus responds with a sobering truth: “A prophet is not without honour except in his native place.” As a result, He does not perform many miracles there, not because His power is lacking, but because their lack of faith prevents them from receiving it.

This gospel challenges us to consider how easily we can become spiritually blind to God’s action in ordinary places and people. We may also fail to recognise grace when it comes in familiar forms, through family, community, or the simple rhythms of daily life.

The Lord still comes to us in the ordinary. Ask for the grace to be able to see God at work even in what we think we already know.
