Friday July 24th: The soil of our heart

With patience, prayer, and repentance, even hard soil can become fertile ground.

Matthew 13: 18 – 23

Jesus explains the parable of the sower, revealing that the seed is the Word of God and the soil is the human heart. The Word is proclaimed to all, but it bears fruit only where it is received with openness and trust.

Some hearts are like the path, hardened by distraction or indifference, where the Word cannot take root. Others are like rocky ground, where enthusiasm is quick but shallow, unable to endure trials. Still others are like thorny soil, where worries and worldly desires choke the life of grace. But there is also good soil, a heart that listens deeply, remains faithful, and allows God’s Word to transform it.

Jesus is inviting each of us to examine our own heart. What kind of soil am I offering the Lord today?

The gospel assures us that fruitfulness is possible. With patience, prayer, and repentance, even hard soil can become fertile ground. May we allow God’s Word to sink deeply into us, so that our lives may yield a rich harvest.
