“For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance, but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”
Matthew 13:10-17
As I mediate on this scripture, I am reminded of a Bible study class, at the beginning of which the teacher said that he hoped that we had come with open minds, as requested. The sessions would entail putting aside some preconceived ideas. Today, Jesus speaks in parables so that his teachings may take root in our lives if we are open. He says, whoever has an open heart will be given deeper truths.
He also says that for those who don’t believe, speaking to them in parables would confuse them by overturning their expectations and preconceived ideas. Sometimes we think we are smart, but we should be humble enough to admit that we are learners and beginners. If we are childlike with open hearts, Jesus will teach us to understand the deeper things.
We pray that as we let go and allow Jesus to teach us, we will have eyes to see, ears to hear and open hearts. May we then experience the healing that the world cannot give.
