Tuesday July 21st: We are His Family

“Here is my brother, sister and mother.”

Matthew 12:46-50

In today’s Gospel Jesus is acknowledging us as His family. This is how He acknowledged the disciples in this passage. We too are His disciples.

To be a member of Jesus’ family is to be in His inner circle and to share His DNA. Jesus taught us to call God ‘Abba’, or ‘Daddy’. This is how close Jesus wants us to be to share in the family and life of the Trinity.

If we share in Jesus’ DNA then we share in His mission. Jesus’ way is to bring us close, love us, care for us, heal our brokenness, comfort our pain, restore and release us from all forms of bondages. Then He sends us out to do the same.

Jesus called the disciples family not because they were perfect, but because they were following Him despite their faults and failures. We too must embrace Him even as we struggle with our weaknesses and imperfections.

Lord Jesus, thank you for loving us so much that you call us family. Amen.
