The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SSVP), Trinidad and Tobago, was proudly represented at the International General Assembly of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, held in Lisbon, Portugal, from June 16–19, by National President Nigel Phillip.
The Assembly brought together Vincentian leaders from more than 150 countries to reflect on the work of the international confederation, strengthen international collaboration, and establish strategic priorities for the future mission of the Society.
It served as an opportunity for delegates to share experiences, review governance and financial accountability, and reaffirm the Society’s commitment to serving Christ through service to the poor.
Among the highlights of the Assembly were discussions centred on four key themes: spirituality, recruitment, governance, and accountability. Delegates reaffirmed that spirituality remains the foundation of the Vincentian vocation, encouraging members to deepen their relationship with Christ through prayer, formation, and service.
The Assembly also recognised the importance of recruiting new members, particularly younger Catholics, to ensure that the Society continues its mission of charity for generations to come.
Good governance and financial accountability featured prominently throughout the discussions. National Councils were encouraged to strengthen leadership, promote transparency, uphold sound stewardship of resources, and continue implementing best practices that inspire confidence among members, donors, and the communities they serve.
The Assembly also reflected on the many humanitarian challenges facing the world today, including poverty, displacement, conflict, food insecurity, and natural disasters. Delegates reaffirmed the Society’s commitment to responding with compassion, practical assistance, and Christian solidarity wherever the need exists.
The America I Region was represented by delegates from Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas, St Lucia, Jamaica, Grenada, Suriname, and Dominica. Regional discussions focused on strengthening collaboration among National Councils, promoting leadership development, revitalising Conferences, and sharing successful Vincentian initiatives across the Caribbean.
A separate regional meeting was held with Althea Graham (USA), Vice President for Territorial Internationalisation (America I). Discussions centred on her continued support for the region through member formation, governance, Conference development, international twinning, and strategies to strengthen the Society’s presence throughout the Caribbean.
Reflecting on the experience, National President Nigel Phillip described the Assembly as both enriching and inspiring.

“The General Assembly reminded us that while the challenges facing our communities continue to grow, our mission remains unchanged—to encounter Christ in those who are poor and vulnerable. The emphasis placed on spirituality, recruitment, governance and accountability provides a strong foundation as we continue strengthening the Society in Trinidad and Tobago and responding to those most in need.”
Inspired by the Assembly, the National Council of the SSVP in Trinidad and Tobago is extending an open invitation to parishioners throughout the country to consider becoming Vincentians.
Membership offers an opportunity to put faith into action through home visitation, friendship, advocacy, and practical assistance to individuals and families experiencing hardship.
As the Society continues to respond to increasing social and economic challenges, additional volunteers are needed to strengthen existing Conferences and establish new ones within parish communities. Those who feel called to serve are encouraged to contact their parish Conference or the National Council to learn more about becoming a Vincentian.
