“No sign shall be given them.”
Matthew 12:38-42
We, like the Scribes and Pharisees in Jesus’ day, always want proof – proof that we are loved; proof that God exists; proof that whatever we are doing is not for nothing. Yet Jesus says, “No sign shall be given them.” Why? Because a demand for a sign or a miracle shows that we are not willing to recognize the divine presence around us, to really see for ourselves what is right before our very eyes.
When was the last time we sat in awe at a magnificent sunset, or were moved by the gentle touch of a loved one, or inspired by a thought-provoking speech, or amazed at the wonder of our own being?
Once we open our hearts to the ordinary yet explosive beauty in and around us, there will be no need for us to be called an “evil and unfaithful generation,” but rather a people who acknowledge there is something greater here than Jonah in the belly of the whale or the wisdom of King Solomon.
