Sunday July 19th: The Kingdom of heaven

“Let them both grow until the harvest” …

Matthew 13: 24 – 43

Many of us may have planted good seeds in a garden, hoping to grow our favourite plants. As the seedlings appeared, weeds also sprang up—though we had not planted them. When we tried to pull out the weeds, we uprooted the young plants as well.

In the first parable, the servants asked Jesus if they should weed out the darnel.  Jesus replied “No, because when you weed out the darnel you might pull up the wheat with it. Let them both grow till the harvest.”

Jesus knows that with time, patience, and maturity the servants will see the difference between the wheat and the weeds. The servants themselves would have matured, having benefitted from more experience, greater understanding, and greater wisdom. With maturity, our seeing changes.

In the garden of our lives, we all have wheat and weeds growing side by side. Merciful God, teach us to guard the seed of your word which you have planted in our hearts. May your just judgement lead us into your kingdom. Amen.
