Jesus reveals that He Himself is the fulfillment of the law and in Him, God’s mercy is made visible.
Matthew 12: 1 – 8.
The Pharisees criticize the disciples for picking ears of corn on the Sabbath. They are so focused on rules that they fail to recognize the deeper purpose of God’s law. Jesus reminds them that the Sabbath was never meant to become a burden. God’s commandments lead people into life, mercy, and communion with Him.
By pointing to David eating the bread of the temple, Jesus shows that human need and mercy stand at the heart of God’s will. Then He declares something extraordinary: “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” Jesus reveals that He Himself is the fulfillment of the law. In Him, God’s mercy is made visible.
This gospel challenges us to examine our own hearts. Sometimes we can become rigid in judgment, more concerned with appearances than compassion. True holiness is not cold legalism; it is love shaped by obedience to God.
The Lord desires mercy, not sacrifice without love. May we learn to see others with the compassion and understanding that Christ Himself shows to us each day.
