“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.”
Matthew 10: 16 – 23
In today’s gospel, Jesus speaks with striking honesty to His disciples. He does not promise comfort, popularity, or worldly success. Instead, He says, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.” The Christian life is not lived without opposition. Faithfulness to Christ will sometimes bring misunderstanding, rejection, and sacrifice.
Yet Jesus also tells His disciples not to be afraid. They are not abandoned. The Holy Spirit will speak through them in moments of trial. This gospel is therefore not a message of fear, but of courage and trust. The strength of the disciple does not come from clever arguments or personal power, but from remaining close to Christ.
We see this truth throughout the history of the Church. The apostles, martyrs, and saints endured persecution, but their witness transformed the world because they remained faithful. The Lord asks the same of us today: to be prudent, faithful, and steadfast in difficult circumstances.
When trials come, may we remember that Christ never sends His disciples alone.
