“Save us Lord! We are going down.”
Matthew 8: 23-27
Emails from my niece are always accompanied by an African Proverb, “Smooth seas don’t make skillful sailors.” That saying reminds me of today’s dramatic Gospel story which is so relevant today.
Perhaps the turbulent storm, choppy waters and violent winds served as initiation for the disciples who followed Jesus into the boat just after he shared with them the difficulty of discipleship. Could it be an object lesson indicating that their call to discipleship would be far from ‘smooth sailing’?
What do we learn as 21st Century disciples weathering the storms that beset us as we face health, financial and relational problems in our personal lives as well as societal, political, and global crises? How does the boat of the Church stem the tide of relativism, secularism, racism and the other ‘isms’ which threaten to engulf value systems?
Our attempts to navigate troubled waters must be accompanied by the cry, “Save us Lord!” He is in the boat with us and can command the elements and calm our fears. We respond, “Aye, aye Captain!”
