Sunday June 28th: Wisdom rooted in God

“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.”

Matthew 10:37-42

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks with the same clarity He showed at age 12 in the Temple: love for God must come first. “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.” He does not diminish family, but He orders it. When God is the anchor, our love for spouse, children, and community becomes deeper, freer, and less possessive.

Jesus also speaks of the cross. The cross is not only suffering, but the daily choice to live our faith – to forgive when it hurts, to speak truth with love, to put prayer before comfort, to remain faithful when it’s easier to walk away.

Yet Jesus ends with tenderness: “Whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones will not lose his reward.” God sees every quiet act of love – a word of encouragement, a patient ear, a simple kindness. No love given for God’s sake is ever wasted.

May we put Christ first, carry our crosses with courage, and trust that every act of love builds God’s Kingdom in our homes and nation.
