Really wanting to catch a break….

By Anansi’s Daughter

Yuh ever sit down and genuinely wonder how people surviving these days? Like REAL surviving. Not Instagram surviving. Not ‘soft-life’ surviving. I talking about paying bills, buying groceries, putting gas, trying to save, trying to build a future… and somehow still keeping yuh sanity intact. Because honestly? This adulting thing feeling like a group project nobody explain properly.

One job not enough anymore. Some people working a 9–5, doing a side hustle, selling something online, freelancing, babysitting somebody child, and STILL trying to figure out if they could afford KFC this weekend without guilt. We laughing about it online yes… but deep down? Plenty people exhausted.

And the frustrating part is hearing older generations say things like, “Well, in my time…”

Sir… respectfully… in your time yuh could buy land, build house, raise four children, own a car, and still have change left over from one salary. Now? People with degrees, qualifications, and experience still getting told, “We regret to inform you…” like rejection is a full-time subscription service.

Mortgage? Scary.

Rent? High.

Groceries? Criminal.

And even getting a credit card nowadays does feel like yuh applying to enter Heaven’s gates. The pressure heavy.

Because we not just trying to survive for weself anymore. Some of us helping parents, supporting siblings, paying loans, carrying family burdens, and trying not to drown mentally at the same time. And somehow society still expecting us to ‘have it together’.

Sometimes it feel like this generation carrying the weight of the world on we back. And yet… we still waking up. Still trying. Still applying. Still praying. Still showing up even when mentally tired.

So are we a strong generation… or are we just a generation that never really got the chance to rest? Maybe both. Because there’s a different kind of exhaustion that comes from constantly fighting for space. Fighting for opportunities. Fighting to ‘make it’. Fighting to prove yuh worth in a world where everybody competing for the same small opening.

And social media does make it worse too. Everybody online ‘winning’. Buying houses. Travelling. Launching businesses. Getting engaged. Living soft life. Meanwhile, you sitting down calculating if you could stretch that paycheque till month end without stress eating half a loaf of bread.

Sometimes, the pressure does affect we faith, too. Because there are moments where people genuinely asking God, ‘What exactly I doing wrong?’ We praying, working hard, trying to stay positive, trying not to give up… and still feeling stuck. But one thing I learning slowly is this: God never promised life would be easy. But He never said we carrying it alone either.

And maybe that’s why, despite everything, this generation still standing. Tired, yes. Anxious, yes. Burnt out? Definitely. But still standing. Still finding ways to laugh. Still helping each other. Still dreaming even when reality hard. Still believing that somehow things could get better. That kind of resilience deserves more credit than we give weself.

Because maybe strength doesn’t always look like ‘having it all together’.

Maybe strength is crying quietly and still getting up the next morning to try again. Maybe strength is trusting God while checking yuh account balance with fear. Maybe strength is carrying pressure nobody sees… and still choosing not to give up.

So, no… we not lazy. We not weak. And we definitely not failing. We just trying to survive in a world that getting heavier by the day.

And maybe… just maybe… God seeing every silent battle we fighting… even the ones nobody else understands.
