The Birth of St. John the Baptist
“All who heard it treasured it…”
Luke 1:57-66, 80
“There was a man sent by God, whose name was John. He came to bear witness to the light, to prepare an upright people for the Lord.” These are the words of the entrance antiphon of today’s Mass, as we celebrate the Solemnity of the birth of St. John the Baptist, the herald of the Saviour.
In his time, the people wondered at the talk of the events surrounding his birth and treasured it in their hearts. In our time we too have something to treasure – the knowledge that John was sent not only to proclaim Christ but to prepare us. His words of repentance and message of salvation are meant for us, so that we may always be ready to receive the Christ. For our part, let us listen carefully and receive the message joyfully.
May the prayers of John the Baptist lead us to the Lamb of God. Amen.
