Friday June 19th: God as Our Treasure

What we treasure in our hearts tend to dictate our choices, our priorities, and it even shapes our identity.

Matthew 6: 19 – 23

Jesus speaks today about where we place our treasure. He says, “Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth,” where everything is fragile and temporary. Instead, store up treasures in heaven, where things endure.

“Where our treasure is, there will our heart will be also.” What we treasure in our hearts tend to dictate our choices, our priorities, and it even shapes our identity. If we treasure wealth, status, or power, we not only tie ourselves to things that pass away, but we become grasping and greedy. Selfishness will rule us. But if we treasure God, we become freer, more loving, and more alive. Generosity will rule us.

We choose our treasure based on how we see. Jesus says the eye is the lamp of the body, which, either admits light or causes darkness. A clear eye sees God and His values and goodness. A clouded eye does not see beyond itself. It becomes absorbed in its own needs and wants.

Today’s choice is clear. See God as our only treasure.
