Thursday June 18th: How to Pray

“Forgive us our debts.”

Matthew 6:7-5

As part of his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches his disciples the correct way of praying to God. Firstly, we approach the Father with reverence. Then we recognize we are both intimate with God and, at the same time, pray in communion with others as we say, “Our Father.”

One of the key elements in our prayer is the need for forgiveness. Forgiveness is both relational and transformative. We seek forgiveness from the Father because we have wronged our brother or sister, and until we humble ourselves and obtain reconciliation from those whom we have wronged, we will not find peace. Consequently, we will not experience God’s forgiveness.

The converse is also true. We know extremely well that when others have wronged us, and we fail to forgive them, that wrongdoing weighs on us. Until we can forgive the wrongdoer and ourselves too, God’s peace will elude us.

Dear Father, help us to forgive one another so that we can experience your healing grace. Amen
