Thursday June 11th: Blueprint for eternal life

‘Come to terms with your opponent in good time’

Matthew 11: 20–26

In this passage Jesus lays out a blueprint for us if we want to have eternal life. He starts by telling us: If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees you will never get into the kingdom of heaven. Practicing the Ten Commandments alone, like the Pharisees, is not enough to get us into the Kingdom of heaven.

Jesus has told us that to follow him we have to take up our cross daily. This is not an easy task. Before coming to Jesus, he states: If you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and them come back and present your offering. This is an example of the commandment to love our neighbour as ourselves.

Lord, give me the strength to always forgive, and to love others who may have wronged me.
