Jesus cannot be confined to political ideologies, personal agendas, or limited expectations.
Mark 12: 35 – 37
In today’s Gospel, Jesus unsettles the crowd’s assumptions about the Messiah. The scribes taught that the Christ would simply be “the son of David,” a political heir who would restore national power. Jesus does not deny this title, but He refuses to be reduced to it. Quoting Psalm 110, He asks how David could call the Messiah “Lord” if the Messiah were only David’s descendant. Jesus stretches their imagination beyond familiar categories.
The challenge remains urgent today. We often stereotype Jesus according to our preferences or ideas: moral teacher, revolutionary, therapist, cultural symbol, or private spiritual guide. Yet Jesus consistently exceeds every label placed upon Him. Jesus cannot be confined to political ideologies, personal agendas, or limited expectations. He is both fully human and more than human; both servant and Lord.
We must allow Jesus to change our assumptions about Him rather than we reshaping Him into our own image. Faith matures when we listen to who Christ reveals Himself to be, not merely who we want Him to be.
