Thursday June 4th: Being consumed

Feast of Corpus Christi

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.”

John 6: 51-58

I gained new perspective on Day 22. of How to Be HIS by Fr. Jesse J. Maingot, O.P. and Fr. Ignatius John Schweitzer, O.P. when I read John Tauler: Consuming and Being Consumed.

I reflected on “being consumed.” I now see that in the current reality experienced by many of us, we are being consumed – gnawed, chewed up and munched on by God:

• When we are painfully and continuously stripped of pride, self-absorption, old habits, thought patterns and behaviours. The dying of the old self.
• When, in times of trauma, doubt, confusion, uncertainty and waiting, we are forced to depend on God alone and not cling stubbornly to self-reliance.
• In the hardships and trials God uses to purify us so Christ may live more fully in us and we in Him.

On this Feast of Corpus Christi, in Tauler’s words, I pray for “trustful and loving surrender to the Lord,” the “key in allowing ourselves to be consumed and more fully transformed by these God-ordained trials in our lives.” Amen.
