Auntie May’ turns 100

Family and friends gathered recently to celebrate the 100th birthday of Mable De Leon, ‘Auntie May’ as she is fondly called. Auntie May is a woman whose life has touched many hearts over the years. Reaching a century of life is a rare and remarkable milestone, and the occasion was filled with joy, love, and gratitude.

Born on May 26, 1926, in the small village of Moruga, Auntie May grew up during a time when life was very different from today. She often shares stories about her childhood, the importance of family values, and the hard work that shaped her life. Throughout the years, she witnessed many historical changes, including advances in technology, transportation, and communication.

Auntie May dedicated much of her life to her family, church, and community. After the death of her husband 46 years ago, she raised her children as a single parent. Through her strength, guidance, and unwavering support, she inspired her children and many young people to pursue their dreams and strive for a better future.

As a faithful member of her church, she participated in prayer meetings, fundraising events, and outreach programmes that helped families in need. Her strong faith and willingness to serve made her a respected and beloved member of the congregation.

In the community, Auntie May was known for her kindness and generosity. She often volunteered at community events, supported charitable activities, and offered guidance and encouragement to younger generations. Many people admired her caring spirit and positive attitude.

She continually blesses her children and grandchildren, reminding them to be kind to others and to feed those in need. “Then you will live long like me,” she says, “because you make Jesus happy.”

Auntie May still shakes the marac and sings Parang with her son, Peter De Leon known as ‘Parang Boss’, in their family Parang band.

During the celebration, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, church members, neighbours, and friends came together to honour her remarkable journey. There was music, Parang, laughter, speeches, and sharing of treasured memories. Many described her as a loving mother, loyal friend, devoted Christian, and an inspiration to everyone around her.

In her short speech, Auntie May expressed gratitude for the love and support she received throughout her life. She encouraged younger generations to value family, remain faithful, work hard, and treat others with kindness and respect.

Celebrating 100 years is not only about age but also about the legacy a person leaves behind. Auntie May’s life serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, faith, love, and the importance of serving others in both church and community.
