They said to him, ‘Allow us to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.’
Mark 10:32-45
In Today’s gospel, James and John want places of honour as Jesus walks toward suffering. Their request is a warning…we can try to bypass suffering or seek shortcuts. However, Jesus teaches that the real greatness is found in the trenches… letting plans and schedules be interrupted, sharing burdens of others, washing the feet of those who may soon disappoint us, being patient and supportive while the health of a loved one declines, and doing all thiswithout counting costs or needing applause.
When we carry our daily crosses, Christ does more than comfort us…he forms us. The cross reshapes our motives from self centred ones to service of others. This is how the Son of Man saves, by giving his life as ransom.
Lord Jesus, give us the grace to drink your cup and share your way, so that our greatness may look like humble service to others, Amen.
