“You will be repaid a hundred times over…”
Mark 10:28-31
Recently, a fascinating story has been making news. The multi-millionaire co-founder of the billion-dollar ‘e.l.f. cosmetics’ empire has given away all his wealth to charity, surrendered his lavish Hollywood lifestyle, and is now ordained a Catholic priest. In his words: “My life has been culled down to the bare minimum; …I’ve never been happier in my life and have found lasting joy in my vocation. But” he said, “I was quickly cut off from my group.”
There are echoes of this story in today’s Gospel as we hear St. Peter ask Jesus, “What about us? We have left everything and followed you.” Jesus’s reply is both reassurance and warning. There will be persecution, but you will be repaid a hundred times over, now and in the world to come.
So, take heart Disciples. Every sacrifice for His sake – every charitable donation, every missed lime, every invitation declined in favour of attending Mass, every relationship lost because of your faith – God sees them all. The repayment of eternal life awaits.
