Feast of Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church
When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, behold your son,” and to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
John 19: 25-34
Today the church celebrates the feast of Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. Mary is the mother of Jesus. We are the body of Christ. She is also the mother of the faithful. We honor her because in his dying moments, from the cross, Jesus gave her to us as our mother. When he said to his beloved disciple, “Behold your mother.” He was speaking to the whole church.
So today, we celebrate the good news that the mother of Jesus is also our mother. So, Jesus is also our brother. Our mother is usually the most significant person in our lives. Mary is very significant in our faith-lives because Jesus gave her to us to accompany us on our life-journey. She prays for us not only now and at the hour of our death but throughout our lives, providing comfort md protection.
This day is a call for each one of us to follow, more, Mary’s example of holiness and surrender to all God asks of us.
