“Do you now believe?”
John 16: 29-33
Can you remember a time in school when you said, “Now I understand,” only to get a test at the end of term on the topic and fail it miserably? I know I have. I suppose the same thing happened to the disciples.
In today’s Gospel they assure Jesus that now they believe He is the Messiah. Jesus, like all good teachers, questions that belief and knowledge. Knowing that there is still so much that they need to understand.
It’s the same with our belief that we know our religion. We do not need any further formation after Confirmation. We know everything already. Then one day we are tested by circumstances or by a cunning detractor and we scatter.
The lesson we can take from today’s Gospel is that our life as a Christian requires continuous life-long formation.
