Sunday May 17th: Parting Words

I am with you always.”

Matthew 28:16 – 20

After being called by Jesus, the disciples followed him.  For three years they saw the wonders he worked, they listened to his teachings, they ate, drank and lived with him.

Jesus prepares to return to his Father in heaven. He commissions them “Go, therefore and make disciples of all the nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you.”

We, now, are the missionary disciples who Jesus calls to follow these same instructions. With the Holy Spirit within us, we are sent to bring good news to the afflicted and to perform works of mercy.

Like the disciples who followed Jesus, we too will encounter challenges along the way. However, Jesus reminds us that we are never alone as we do his will.  As he ascends to meet his father, Jesus leaves us with these comforting words “I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.”
