The mission of the Church extends far beyond the walls of our parishes. While the Eucharist remains the source and summit of our faith, the life of the Church is also expressed through its ongoing work in families, communities, schools, and society at large.
Across the Archdiocese, this mission is carried forward through the work of the Commissions, which are the structured ministries that respond to the spiritual, social, and pastoral needs of the people of God.
Each Commission plays a distinct but interconnected role.
The Archdiocesan Family Life Commission provides support to couples and families through marriage preparation, parenting guidance, and programmes that strengthen relationships at every stage of life. In a world where families face increasing pressures, this work is essential in helping to build stable, faith-centred homes.
The Youth Commission focuses on engaging young people, creating spaces where they can encounter Christ, grow in faith, and develop as leaders. Through retreats, formation programmes, and community engagement, young people are invited to see the Church not only as a place of worship, but as a place where they belong.
The Catechetical Commission ensures that the faith is handed on with clarity and purpose. Through the preparation of children and adults for the Sacraments, as well as ongoing faith formation, this Commission supports parishes in nurturing a deeper understanding of what it means to live as Catholic Christians.
Other Commissions contribute in equally vital ways. The Liturgical Commission supports the quality and integrity of our worship. Social outreach initiatives ensure that the Church remains present to those who are vulnerable, offering care, dignity, and practical assistance. Evangelisation efforts continue to invite others into a living relationship with Christ.
Together, these Commissions ensure that the Church remains responsive, relevant, and rooted in its mission. They help translate faith into action by forming disciples, strengthening families, and reaching out to those in need.
Importantly, much of this work happens quietly. It is seen in the preparation of a couple for marriage, the formation of a child for First Communion, the guidance offered to a struggling family, or the support extended to a young person seeking direction. While these moments may not always be visible, they are deeply impactful.
The work of the Commissions is sustained through the support of the faithful. On Ascension Sunday weekend, May 16 and 17, the collection taken across all parishes will be dedicated to funding these ministries. This special collection ensures that the Church can continue to carry out its mission effectively and consistently across the Archdiocese.
As we celebrate the Ascension, we are reminded of Christ’s call to His disciples to go forth and continue His work. Today, that call is lived out through the Church’s ministries and through the generosity of its people.
By supporting this collection, parishioners are not only contributing financially but are actively participating in the mission of the Church.
