The 21st Annual Diocesan Bible Quiz concluded Sunday, March 22, after three rounds of questions on topics of the Gospel of Matthew, a portion of the Gospel of John, the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church and hymns related to Scripture. Around 200 young people from across the diocese participated in three categories: Junior (12–14), Senior (15–17), and Young Adult (18–25).
A special awards and appreciation ceremony was held Sunday, April 12 (Divine Mercy Sunday) for participants from Georgetown and surrounding areas at Bishop’s House. Notably, this year’s quiz saw participation from teams in Regions 1, 2, 8, and 9, in addition to those from the Coast, according to a Catholic Standard report.
It said that the closing ceremony began with welcome remarks from Angela Abraham-Parks, Diocesan Youth Coordinator, followed by a brief presentation on the significance of Divine Mercy and recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
Bishop Francis Alleyne OSB of Georgetown then addressed the gathering, presenting copies of the New Testament resource Identity: Identified – Navigating the Challenges of Life, compliments of the Guyana Bible Society.
“The text invites young people to reflect on questions of identity, purpose, and belonging, offering reassurance that they are not alone,” the diocesan weekly stated.
Rooted in God’s love it affirms the dignity and purpose of each person and encourages readers to find strength and guidance through Scripture, faith, and community.
During a feedback session, participants and catechists expressed deep gratitude for the experience, describing it as both “enriching and spiritually uplifting.” Many shared that the quiz helped deepen their prayer life and understanding of the faith. Fr Joel Thompson SJ, who prepared the questions and study material, offered words of encouragement to all present. Certificates of participation were distributed, followed by the presentation of trophies. The event concluded in a joyful atmosphere, with games and fellowship celebrating a renewed love for Scripture. Participants were encouraged to continue growing in faith and to allow the Word of God to guide their daily lives.
