Monday April 27th: Freely and On Purpose

“I lay it down of my own free will…”

John 10:11-18

There is a profound saying that goes, “If you are not free to say no, then your yes means nothing.”

In today’s very familiar Gospel passage, Jesus makes a strong and reassuring declaration for us:

“I am the good shepherd; The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep…I lay down my life of my own free will, so it is in my power to take it up again.”

Laying down My life – this He proved not only by His death on Calvary, but through his concern and self-sacrifice for people every day of His life.

Taking it up again – The resurrection is the fulfilment of that promise. He willing suffered death so that He could conquer it for our sakes. We have the promise of eternal life because He went into the grave, freely and on purpose. All for love of us, all the sheep, all His disciples, who listen to His voice.

This is the source of our Easter joy. Let us continue to remember and celebrate this selfless and endless love. Alleluia, Alleluia!
