Thursday April 23rd: Bread of Life

Jesus is inviting us to …  a state of being ‘through him, with him and in him.’

John 6:44-51

When my mother died twenty years ago today, I reflected on this passage and knew that she had passed on values and teachings that formed me to this day. I had eaten of her bread which she sacrificed to provide.

What does Jesus mean “to have eternal life”? Is it that we become immortal, never dying? In the Bible, “eternal life” (Greek: zōē aiōnios) refers to sharing in God’s own life; being in relationship and communion with God, participating in divine life. Eternal life begins now!

Jesus invites us to be aware of our need for earthly bread, and for the bread from heaven; to a state of being ‘through him, with him and in him’ – where we grow through discipleship, love, and obedience.

A synodal church requires us to be in relationship with God and others in our family and community, to a life of prayer, discernment and self-emptying so that we will listen intently to the will of God to carry out his mission.

I thank God for parents, teachers, pastors, who offer us bread like Jesus to guide our living now and forever.
