“He who comes to me will never hunger.”
John 6:30-35
For many of us, we erroneously believe that power, prestige, possessions, fame, self-advancement are the “bread” that will satisfy us. We hunger and thirst for these, but they seldom satisfy us because we are made for something greater than these. We are made for God.
In this passage, Jesus insists that he is the “bread” we hunger for and thirst after. Bread provides sustenance; it enables one to survive. His listeners recalled the time when their ancestors were hungry in the desert and cried out for relief. Jesus reminded them that it was God who provided what they needed. It was God who satisfied their hunger.
Jesus is telling them and us by extension that he is “the bread of life”, he is the true bread that has come down from heaven. No earthly bread will satisfy us. If we believe in him and follow in his footsteps, he will give us what our souls long for, so we can confidently sing with the psalmist: “Only in God is my soul at rest” (Psalm 62)
