Sunday April 19th: Recognizing Jesus

“And their eyes were opened and they recognized him.”

Luke 24:13-35

When a loved one dies, we can become sad and discouraged. Like Cleopas and
the other disciple, we want to walk away from the sadness.

Then an elderly aunt comes to visit during this time of grief. She sees
our empty expressions and listens to our story of how the death is
affecting us. Our aunt stirs up treasured memories of our loved one: taking us to church, preparing meals, and eating around the table as family and many more gems.

Jesus came to walk with us during that time of despondency disguised as our
elderly aunt. Jesus explained the scriptures to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus and their hearts began to burn with faith. Jesus blessed the bread and the eyes of the disciples were opened. The disciples recognized Christ in the
Scriptures and the Eucharist.

Our aunt recalled the faith, patience, humility among the qualities of our
loved one which inspired us. With gratitude, we recognized Jesus in our
caring loved one.
