Turn to our Lady in your Calvary season

Sabella Morris-Olivier

“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mk 6:31)

As I drove to Emmaus Centre, I scarcely had any time to process the opportunity that presented itself to spend the entire Holy Week in a silent retreat under the spiritual direction of Sr Patrice Simmons. I knew I could not decline; it was an open invitation that God put in my heart waiting for me.

Upon my arrival, I slowly unpacked my clothing, not knowing what to expect over the next eight days yet moving forward in faith. Undoubtedly, the days were well spent in reflection and prayer with scriptures and evenings in Mass at nearby churches.  The retreat was a direct call, to leave everything behind and spend quiet time away from the noise and distractions of the world with the Lord. However, I also encountered someone else I did not expect. Our Lady.

One day, as I sat with Sr Patrice during daily spiritual direction, she explained the pain and challenges Mary would have endured from the moment she was visited by Angel Gabriel to being a firsthand witness to the crucifixion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ—her own son whom she carried in her womb and still served. The Holy Spirit moved in Sr Patrice as she spoke. Although I may have known this all my life, suddenly, the knowledge that settled in my mind for years, moved into my heart.

Indeed, what a sorrowful journey Mary our Mother endured even as a chosen vessel to carry our Lord Jesus. I was moved deeply and, in the moment, I finally accepted my own journey while reflecting on her suffering. Although I could never understand what exactly her experience was like, the Holy Spirit spoke to me through the revelation that those who suffer pain, embarrassment, hurt but still trust in God’s Word, are certainly seen and being carried by our Father.

God never abandons His children nor did He abandon His son. What the enemy meant for shame and tragedy, God in His infinite wisdom, transformed the burden of our Lord’s cross of Calvary for His glory.

If you are enduring a Calvary season in your life, suffering in human pain and brokenness. Turn to our Lady, ask her to intercede for you to her Son. Ask her to help you carry your burdens to our Lord but this time, leave it at the foot of the cross. Leave it there, because our victory is already won.  Your resurrection will come.

May this season of Easter bring you a renewed joy and restoration in our resurrected Lord.
