“Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many.”
John 6: 1-15
In today’s Gospel, a boy, with five barley loaves and two fish, is offered as the solution to the hunger of more than five thousand people. It is a simple and seemingly insignificant offering. The disciples doubt its power; it seems far too little. Yet Jesus takes this humble gift, blesses it, and multiplies it beyond everyone’s expectations.
In this small act, we see a reflection of Easter: the boy offers what he has, and Jesus offers himself – fully, freely, abundantly. The boy’s gift becomes a symbol for Christ’s generosity who gives his life for the world. A single life, transforming human weakness, smallness, and insufficiency into life-giving abundance.
Easter reminds us that our contributions, our efforts, our hearts, though modest, can participate in God’s work when entrusted to Him. The boy’s small offering fed thousands. Christ’s gift of himself feeds the world.
We should never be afraid to bring our simple gifts to Jesus. He will transform them into an abundance that can satisfy many.
