“When he arose on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene from whom he had cast out seven demons.”
Mark 16:9-15
When Jesus rose from the dead, he did not appear first to Peter, the visible head of his church on earth, nor to his beloved disciple, John; he appeared to a woman and one who was infamously under the power of the devil.
By his resurrection and appearance to Mary, Jesus shows that he is Lord over sin and death and has fulfilled the promise to free us from the power of the devil.
Jesus communicates through Mary, that his followers will form his church whose purpose is mission, by telling her not to cling to him and by sending Mary to his apostles.
Father, through the power of Christ’s resurrection and the light of your Holy Spirit, may we discern and respond to your call to mission for each of us today as we meditate on your word. Amen
