Thursday March 19th: Love stronger than law

‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit.’ Matthew 1: 16, 18-21, 24a

As I reflect on the life of Joseph in this scripture passage, I ask, what do we do in difficult situations in our lives?

Joseph faced a difficult situation. He was espoused to Mary but found out that she was pregnant. Joseph was a ‘just’ man and not willing to disobey the law but also, he did not want any harm or embarrassment to come to Mary. Then the Angel appeared in a dream and told him, “Take Mary home as your wife.” Joseph chose love over law, and obedience to God.

When we face family crises and marital problems, let us remember that God continues to talk to us; to reveal himself to us, in those times. No situation should cut us off from going to God. He is always available to guide us in wisdom and love.

Let us be open to God’s presence, especially in family crises so that we could be like Joseph, vessels of God’s love and compassion for those members most in need in particular situations.
